Don MacLeod Obituary, Death – The loss of Don MacLeod, 93 years old, on December 4, 2023, has left the Municipal Retirees Organization of Ontario (MROO) in a state of mourning. With Don’s departure, an era has come to an end at MROO, and the organization will never be the same. Don MacLeod was the mastermind behind the organization’s watershed moments; he was more than just the president before him.

Famously known as the “godfather of MROO,” he played a pivotal role in the group’s inception and the formation of important alliances that determined its future. Among Don’s numerous accomplishments, the CUPE Ontario Pension Committee, which he helped establish in partnership with CUPE’s Ontario Division, was instrumental in the organization’s expansion. He worked tirelessly to ensure that retirees could afford health insurance, and in 1984,

he launched the MROO Health Plan, which was revolutionary for its time and changed the way retirees received their benefits. The plan covered more than 15,000 people. What a visionary leader, Don was, a coworker said. “Rensenes had a presence on the OMERS board, solidifying the protection of our pensions, thanks to his devotion and relentless pursuit of retirees’ rights to have a say in pension matters.”

As a symbol of MROO’s dedication to the well-being and rights of retirees, his legacy is one of innovation and advocacy. Donating $5,000 to the Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario in his honor is a testament to his eternal kindness and care for the welfare of others. While Don MacLeod was MROO’s leader, his influence went far beyond his time in office; his legacy is deeply ingrained in the organization’s fabric. He has left an indelible mark on the organization, guiding it with an unwavering commitment to compassion and excellence.
